Winter Native Tree Planting Day at Te Mata Park, Hawke’s Bay
After several delays due to unfavourable weather conditions, the awaited Winter Native Tree Planting Day at Te Mata Peak, Havelock North, in Hawke's Bay, finally took place on a sunny Sunday morning.
As an avid enthusiast of Te Mata Peak, often found mountain biking, walking my dog, or capturing the breathtaking views with my camera, capturing this event was exceptionally fulfilling.
The event witnessed the participation of around 100 dedicated volunteers of various age groups. Together, they planted nearly 2000 native trees, enhancing the landscape and ecology of Te Mata Peak. The volunteers didn't just plant trees; they also ensured their longevity by installing protective mats and guards around each sapling. This collective effort promises to enrich the Te Mata Peak ecosystem for future generations, providing essential habitats for wildlife, contributing to the beautification of the area, and aiding in ground stabilization.
Several other local businesses and organisations provided pivotal support to the success of the day. Their commitment to the environment and community well-being certainly deserves recognition:
New World Havelock North: Their contribution to local initiatives continues to make a significant impact.
Unichem Jeff Whittaker Pharmacy: Proving that health and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
Pure Catering: For nourishing the volunteers with delicious food.
TC Systems: For PA support
Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Heretaunga: Their dedication to environmental and community projects is unparalleled.
One Billion Trees: An initiative that reminds us of the importance of tree planting for our planet's future.
Trees That Count: Connecting businesses and people wanting to make a difference with native planting projects in need of funding
This event not only fostered a sense of community but also emphasized the importance of preservation and respect for our natural environment. Through the lens of those passionate about Te Mata Park and its legacy, we continue to support and engage in efforts that contribute to a green, sustainable future for Hawke's Bay.
Moreover, I am proud to share that my involvement in capturing the Winter Native Tree Planting Day was part of a pro-bono collaboration with the Te Mata Park Trust; giving back to your local community and documenting such events is something which I strongly believe every photographer out there should aim to do also!
