Project Snapshot: Taste Hastings 2023 for Hastings District Council

Capturing the Essence of Taste Hastings: A Photographic Journey Through Heretaunga Street

For the second year running, I've had the honour of capturing the soul and spirit of Taste Hastings, an exceptional event organized by the Hastings District Council that brings life and vibrancy to the streets of Hastings in Hawke's Bay. Equipped with my professional twin Canon R5 cameras and an array of Canon L series lenses, I delved into the lively atmosphere of Heretaunga Street, ready to document each vibrant moment.

Taste Hastings has evolved beyond a local gathering into a cultural celebration that attracts attendees from the Hawke's Bay community and beyond. This year's event featured appearances from notable personalities including Brodie Retallick, an All Blacks legend native to our region, British wine expert Oz Clarke, who was diligently recording his wine-tasting experiences, and even a surprise appearance from 'Robbie Williams', setting the stage for his upcoming performance at Mission Estate.

The night, a prelude to the Mission Concert and a street party of epic proportions, witnessed an increase in attendance, indicating its growing appeal. The perfect weather enhanced the festive mood, making it clear why the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Taste Hastings is not just about the food and wine; it's a dynamic celebration featuring over 25 pop-up wineries showcasing the best of Hawke's Bay wines, infectious live music from Naked Gun, an array of food trucks, a live DJ, and the Flock Events Street Lounge for relaxation. The "East Block" of Heretaunga Street was overtaken for the evening, allowing attendees to kerb-hop without traffic as they savored the street's offerings.

Through my photography, I aimed to capture the essence of Taste Hastings — the joy, the community, and the unique blend of local and visiting celebrities that add to the event's charm. Below are selected images that pay homage to that unforgettable evening.

A special thank you goes to the Hastings District Council for once again entrusting me with the task of visually documenting the event. It's opportunities like these that allow me to contribute to the narrative of our vibrant community in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.
