Pricing for Corporate and Commercial Photography

Professional corporate photography is indispensable for any business looking to strengthen its branding and online presence. High-quality images play a crucial role in website design, marketing, and establishing a cohesive visual identity.

Understanding the costs associated with commercial photography can be challenging for the layperson, as most photographers customise their fees based on various project specifics. This guide aims to demystify that process, offering insights into:

  • The factors influencing commercial photography costs.

  • An overview of pricing for different types of shoots.

  • Key considerations that affect photographers' rates.

  • Frequently asked questions regarding corporate photography prices.

  • An introduction to my own pricing strategy and how I work with clients.

Please note that this guide is aimed at the Commercial photography marketplace and does not necessarily apply to event, or other photography genres, although there may be overlaps in some areas.

Understanding the Cost of a Business Photoshoot

There's no one-size-fits-all price for business photography, factors include:

  • The photographer's level of experience

  • The nature of your business

  • The type of industry

  • Project specifics

  • Budget constraints

Prices can range widely, from under $500 for modest projects with newbie photographers to over $10,000 for extensive shoots involving highly specialised professionals.

For those on a tight budget, DIY photography is an option, though it's tough to match the quality of professional work.

Understanding a Commercial Photography Pricing Estimate

When hiring a professional photographer, you'll receive a detailed pricing estimate. This figure includes various expenses, such as:

  • Photography rate: The base cost for the actual photography work, not including extra fees like travel or props.

  • Non-photography fees: Charges for additional necessary preparation or follow-up work.

  • Usage fees: Costs associated with the rights to use the photographs in specific ways.

  • Other production expenses: These include costs associated with additional staff, location fees, or equipment rentals.

  • Disbursements: Including vehicle mileage costs, accommodation, etc.

What Influences Photography Rates?

Numerous factors contribute to a photographer's fee structure, these include:

  • Experience and expertise: More experienced photographers typically command higher rates.

  • Type of project: Rates can vary based on the complexity and requirements of the shoot.

  • Additional staff and equipment needs: Larger projects may require assistants, specialist gear, and other resources.

  • Post-production work: Editing and retouching photos add to the overall cost.

  • Licensing and usage rights: The scope and duration of photo usage can affect pricing.

Pricing Structures Explained

Photography pricing can be complex, with terms like "day rate," "hourly rate," and "project rate" often used interchangeably. Here's a breakdown of what these terms generally mean:

  • Photography rate: May refer to the basic charge for taking photos, excluding additional expenses.

  • Creative rate: Encompasses all elements of the project, providing a comprehensive project cost.

  • Day/Half-Day rate: Charges based on a full or half-day shoot, with half-day rates typically exceeding half of the full-day price due to the likelihood of the photographer only being able to commit to undertaking one shoot during that day.

  • Hourly rate: This applies to both the shoot itself and any related tasks undertaken by the photographer.

How SCP Prices Projects

Here at SCP, we try to keep our pricing structure as simple and as easy to understand as possible. We typically base our fees on a half or full-day rate for the photography component, with post-production time charged at our standard hourly rate. One exception to this fee structure, however, is when we photograph business-related staff profiles such as headshots, this is typically charged on a per-person rate.

Over the last 10 years of being in business, we’ve found that (depending on the project scope) there is typically 1 to 2 hours of post-production time needed per hour of photography. This ratio completely depends on the number of images to be retouched, and the actual level of retouching required, so varies case-by-case.

In addition to the creative fee structure above, when required, we also charge for non-photography time, usage fees, production expenses and disbursements. Again, this is on a case-by-case basis and varies with each project.

So how does SCP work with its clients?

Again, we try to keep the process as simple and as straightforward as possible. When you contact us, we’ll have a chat about the imagery you need, the location(s), the factors mentioned above and learn about any other project specifics that are important to you. Once we have a handle on your project, we’ll then be in a position to start looking at the investment needed and provide you with an indication of project costs. Most of the above is done via email and/or telephone.

Our next step is to provide you with a more formal cost estimate, and our Business Terms and Conditions. If you’re happy with the estimate and would like to proceed, you can then digitally sign to accept the estimate. Once signed, the estimate is flagged at our end, we’ll then get in touch to firm up the diary date and get the ball rolling for you.

Upon completion of the shoot, we’ll head back to the studio, download and back up the imagery, and then begin the selection, editing and retouching process. Final edited imagery is then supplied via a secure online gallery ready for you to download and use. We aim for the turnaround time from photography to image supply to be less than one week. Easy as!

Final Thoughts

Commercial photography pricing can be intricate, reflecting the varied demands and specific needs of each project. Engaging in transparent discussions with potential photographers about what their rates include will help you make informed choices. Remember to consider all aspects of the pricing, from the base rate to additional fees, to ensure the photography meets both your budget and your business's needs.

If you have any questions on the above, feel free to drop me an email or add a comment below. As always, if you need photography for your business, feel free to reach out for a chat!
